ASTM E2368 covers the standard practice for strain controlled thermo-mechanical fatigue testing. In cases of high temperatures, fatigue forces on a structure may be from thermal and mechanical effects. This practice is intended to address TMF testing performed in support of such activities as materials research and development, mechanical design, process and quality control, product performance, and failure analysis.
This test simultaneously varies thermal and mechanical forces to look at the damages that occur on the structure. Many effects that are observed can be attributed to fatigue failure of the test material. The test process includes uniaxially loaded test specimens. The test machine used in this standard is strain-controlled. The thermal and mechanical strain applied to the test specimen occur in simultaneous cycles, however each system is controlled independently.
