ASTM E111 covers the standard test method for determining Youngs modulus, tangent modulus, and chord modulus. This ASTM standard test method should be used when determining the elastic properties of a material. This test should not be used in cases in which creep rates influnce the strain measurements. In many applications, the value of a materials Youngs modulus is useful because of the linear behavior that follows Hookes law. Other materials that do not have a linear stress-strain relationship in elastic deformation can still be tested using this method. This can be done by taking strain measurements over small stress ranges and compiling the data. It is important that the test machine used can deliver both tension and compression tests. Mechanical properties that are determined in this test include; Youngs modulus, tangent modulus, and chord modulus of the test material.
