ASTM D395 Rubber Property—Compression Set

ASTM D395 determines the applications in which the rubber will be subjected to compressive stresses in air or liquid media. ASTM D395 can be applied to rubber used in machinery mountings, vibration dampers, seals, and other similar applications. The practices of ASTM D395 are meant to test the material properties of rubber materials, and not the properties of rubber components. Therefore, ASTM D395 specifies a circular rubber disk to be used for the compression test. Compression set tests are intended to measure the ability of rubber compounds to retain elastic properties after prolonged action of compressive stresses and are frequently conducted at elevated temperatures.

Test Procedure

Compression testing for ASTM D395 is done by loading the rubber specimen and holding for 30 minutes. Residual deformation is measured and a compression set calculation can then be performed using equations given in ASTM D395.
