ASTM D1062 Cleavage Strength of Metal-to-Metal Adhesive Bonds

ASTM D1062 tests determine the cleavage strength of metal-to-metal adhesive bonds under specified conditions of preparation and testing. This test can also be used to compare adhesives used with other metallic materials having any specific surface treatment. Test specimens consist of metal pieces glued together with some sort of adhesion according to the listed dimensions in the standard. Metal specimens include brass, copper, aluminum, steel, and phosphor bronze.

Test Procedure

  1. Place and align the specimen in the grips of the testing machine
  2. Apply tensile load at the rate of 270 to 320 kg (600 to 700 lb)/min
  3. Record the maximum load in pounds that the specimen failed at
  4. Record the percent of cohesion, adhesion, and contact failures
  5. Calculate cleavage strength
