API RP-56/58/60 Proppant Crush Test for Frac Sand, Resin Coated Sand, Ceramic Proppant

API 56/58/60 standardized testing was originally established by the American Petroleum Institute. API RP-56/58/60 testing standards were used to determine crush resistance of proppants used in hydraulic fracing or fracturing. In 2001, API and ISO members formed a group to create ISO 13503-2, the current standard test method for testing proppants used in hydraulic fracturing applications. ISO 13503-2 is the standard test method for determining the hydraulic fracture proppant crush resistance.

Equipment Required

An ideal machine for testing hydrofracking proppant crush resistance is TestResources 316 Series Electromechanical Test System. The 316 electromechanical test system features unique improvements over hydraulic test machines, including precision control and automation that enables the user to load samples with a consistent process, improving test consistency and accuracy. For proppant compression testing the 316 electromechanical test system is programmed to automatically follow the test procedure of ISO 13503-2 and API RP-60. This includes the constant rate of extension (at 0.05 mm/min) to an initial load (of 50 to 100 psi). According to ISO 13503-2 and API RP-60, once the preload is achieved, control automatically moves to load rate control (e.g. 2000 psi/min).
