Shear Testing of Hip Implants per ASTM

Hip implants must be vigorously tested before human use. Hip implants have four separate parts that make up the prostheses; the femoral head, femoral stem, acetabular shell, and acetabular linear. ASTM has standardized test methods for determining mechanical properties of hip prostheses to ensure high quality and safety for users. Testing of the calcium phosphate thermal spray is critical. Abrasive wear in-vivo can reek havoc on patients. Shear testing thermal spray used with hip implants will lead to better designs and higher strength. ASTM F1044 is a standard test method for shear testing calcium phosphate adhesion strength to metallic substrates under uniaxial shear stress. The test methods of ASTM F1044 are geared towards improving the design and adhesion strength of thermal spray coatings.
