University Test Laboratory

Biomedical teaching lab test machines are considered an important asset in today’s competitive educational market. Many biomedical research institutions have taken the lead by setting up labs where student clusters of 4 or 5 students perform a battery of common tensile, compression, flexural, stress relaxation and limited fatigue test curriculums. TestResources test systems are utilized in numerous biomedical engineering test labs, including Purdue University, University of Michigan, Michigan Tech, Wayne State, University of Massachusetts, Duke University, The Ohio State University, Georgia Tech and many more. Purdue University outfitted their biomedical teaching lab with a half dozen mechanical test stations with a target cluster size of four students. Their educational focus integrated engineering and biological principles with key topics in biomaterials and biomechanics. Classroom topics include evaluation and interpretation of experimental results, modeling and testing tissue and body mechanics, and biomaterial/tissue interactions.

Lab curriculum objectives are to equip each student to be able to: Implement bio-molecular and cellular experimental concepts towards biomechanics and biomaterials Employ analytical tools and techniques used in the analysis of mechanical properties of tissue and biomaterials, cellular interactions with biomaterials, and finite element analysis Collect, record, process, statistically analyze, and report experimental data related to the analysis of mechanical testing and cellular interactions with biomaterials, and Design a device/and or method to solve a biomechanical or medically relevant problem. TestResources 100 series Universal Test Machines have proven ideal for any engineering curriculum. The most common configuration includes computerized PID control (Touchpad), 225 lb (1 kN) load rating and fixtures that enable tensile, compression and flexural bend test applications. The Q configuration servocontroller performs tensile, compression, shear, peel, stress relaxation, and creep tests on metals, plastics, muscles, tissues, bone, polymers, biomaterials and devices. The all-digital servocontroller is capable of both load or speed rate control. The system also performs sawtooth load or position controlled cyclic tests. Load and position (optional strain channel) data is captured and exported to Excel for analysis.
