Compression Force Deflection (CFD) of Flexible Polyurethane Foam per ASTM D3574 Test C

ASTM D3574 Test C and ISO 3386 both measure the force deflection properties of flexible polyurethane foam at a constant test speed, or rate of extension (CRE). The test is setup to measure the force required to compress the test sample to a level of 50 per cent of thickness. The sample is placed between two compression platens that are larger than the sample size. Note that the two standards are similar but not the same.

The Compression Force Deflection test type, CFD for short, involves a preflex sequence followed by a testing sequence. The thickness of the foam is determined before the preflex sequence and the testing sequence. The testing sequence thickness is reported at the end of the test.

Test Sequence using TestResources Foam Test Software:

  1. Move to Test Start position.
  2. Move at the Contact Rate to the Contact Force.
  3. Move at the Preflex Speed to the Preflex % of thickness.
  4. Dwell for Preflex Dwell time.
  5. Return to the position where the Contact Force was first reached.
  6. Repeat for specified Preflex Cycles.
  7. Move above the foam and dwell for Settling Time.
  8. Move at the Contact Rate to the Contact Force - thickness measurement.
  9. Move at the Test Speed to the Deflection 1 % of thickness.
  10. Dwell for Deflection Dwell time.
  11. Take force measurement at the end of the Deflection Dwell.
  12. Return to the position where the Contact Force was first reached.
  13. Move at the Pre/Post Test Speed to the End Test position.
