FEFCO No. 8 - Edgewise Crush Resistance of Corrugated Fiberboard

FEFCO No. 8 is used to determine the edgewise compressive strength of a short column of single-, double-, or triple-wall corrugated fiberboard. The edgewise crush resistance of corrugated fiberboard is the maximum force that a sample piece being tested will take before crushing.

This test accomplishes the same crush force measurement as TAPPI T838 and TAPPI T839, but all three tests call for different geometry of the corrugated fiberboard specimen and clamps.

Test Procedure

  1. The test specimen is placed on the compression platen supported by two metal blocks with its shorter edges perpendicular to the compression platens.
  2. The load force gradually increases (not to exceed 10N) until the specimen collapses.
  3. The edgewise crush resistance (R) is calculated in kN/m where F is the maximum load in Newtons and L is the length of the specimen in mm.
