Tensile Test Equipment

Tensile Test Equipments; Testing Machines; Testers

Tensile test machines, equipment and testers are configured to order to match different needs of testing samples for their tensile stress of a material or an engineered design. All TestResources test machines are capable of tensile testing, as well as performing many other tests.  A tensile tester is named after the fact that it can perform many standard tensile (and compression) tests on materials, components, and structures. In material testing applications, a tensile tester helps evaluate the Young's modulus (how much a material stretches under strain) of a material and other tensile properties of materials, such as tensile strength.

Tensile testers are loaded with a test sample placed between two gripping fixtures (called ‘tensile grips or tensile jaws’) that are either adjusted manually or automatically to apply force to the specimen. Most tensile testers work by driving a screw (electromechanical), a linear motor, or by use of a servohydraulic actuator. Tensile testers can also be equipped with environmental chambers for testing at different temperatures, in baths, or variable humidity, for example.

Tensile strength is defined by the maxima of a stress-strain curve and typically indicates when the test sample necks down. There are 3 common definitions of tensile strength:

Ultimate tensile strength
- The maximum stress a material can withstand. It is the maximum stress on the stress-strain curve (see item 1 above)

Tensile yield strength - The stress at which material strain changes from elastic to plastic deformation (see 2 above).

Tensile Break strength - The stress coordinate on the stress-strain curve at the point of rupture (see 3 above).

Tensile tests are the most common material strength test and measure properties such as yield strength, modulus, ultimate tensile strength, poissons ratio, reduction of area and elongation to failure.

Tensile Test Equipment requirements can be confirmed by a review of the industry specific standard test methods for many different materials and components. The list below shows selected standards.
