Combined Biaxial Torsion Testing of Materials (Machine Setup)

Metals used in engineered components may experience complex multiaxial states of stress and strain in actual service. Combined biaxial (axial/torsional) testing is based on an accurate simulation of the multiaxial stress states of real-world operating conditions. Specimens are typically thin-walled tubes, and the stress states mathematically well-known. Tests involve simultaneous application of torque and axial loading with some prescribed phase relationship. In addition, constitutive modeling of metal helps predict performance. 930 and 830 Series axial/torsional test machines offer a proven path to investigate material response to multiaxial static and fatigue stresses. The biaxial test systems feature stiff, high-natural-frequency load frames with integral axial and torsional actuators.
