OVERVIEW

Forged materials are destructively tested for a variety of mechanical characteristics to confirm performance to quality requirements. Testing ensures the metal has been deformed so the grains follow the shape of the part. Test types include static tensile strength tests, high temperature tensile testing, stress rupture, fracture toughness and fatigue testing. Tensile testing of high strength metals is common and requires a high force test machine with grips and extensometer. Each test type tends to have different sample geometries and analysis and so each configuration is made to match customers specific needs. For instance, a fracture toughness test may require clevis grips made to match compact tension samples, with a clip on displacement gage selected to the displacement range of the sample. A tensile test sample is commonly a 0.5 inch diameter sample that must be gripped with a wedge action grip rated to handle the loads and different geometries. In addition an axial extensometer must be selected to match the materials range of extension. In the case of fatigue testing, the machine must be capable of rapid movement to shorten the test time, because of test duration.
